I bought this one originally just intending to inspect it and return it. The controversy over these GL visors is that there are no period pics of them in wear. The insignia is found in period photos worn by EM/NCO GL-personnel on the left or right breast.
However, the insignia is classic in set-up for a hat badge, as they have 3 thin needle-type aluminum prongs.
Much to my surprise, the hat does not have the prongs going thru the lining (nor are there any stitch marks or other holes in the lining from prior insignia).
I also checked behind the GL insignia for evidence of a prior bullion eagle, and there was none--this is the only insignia that was ever on the hat.
I have no doubt that the hat and insignia are period in application. However, the hat is obviously unissued, and is an LVA piece. My hypothesis is that they were made, but never issued (for reasons unknown).
